The Making of Marcus Johnson: Writing a Veteran Protagonist

When I set out to write Sweetwater Reckoning, I knew Marcus Johnson had to be more than an action hero. He had to carry the weight of his service with him, the same way real veterans do.
Marcus is haunted by the ghosts of war. He is driven by a sense of duty that does not disappear when the uniform comes off. Writing him meant drawing from my own experience and the experiences of the men and women I served alongside.
Fiction gives us permission to explore truths that are hard to say plainly. Through Marcus, I could show what it means to be a warrior in a world that does not always understand what that costs.
